Shalom everyone! The following is a lecture given in 2012 by Ehav Ever called “Debunking the Myth of the Curse of Ham.” Genesis 9:20 – 27 tells of the unfortunate events leading to Noach cursing his grandson, Canaan, the son of Ham. The narrative states Noach had planted a vineyard and drank of its wine. He became drunk and lay naked in his tent. Ham saw his father in this condition and then called his brothers Shem and Japheth to look upon him as well, however; instead of looking upon their father’s nakedness, Shem and Japheth took a garment which they laid upon their shoulders, walked backwards and covered him. When Noach found out what Ham did, he cursed Ham‘s youngest son, Canaan, relegating him to a life of servitude to Shem and Japheth. Noach cursed Canaan only; Ham had three other sons, Cush (Ethiopia), Mizraim (Egypt), and Put (Libya). These sons settled in or near the African continent, and as a result, Ham was said to be the progenitor of Africans. Unfortunately, Noach‘s curse has been used as a justification for the enslavement, mistreatment, persecution and genocide of peoples of African descent and other dark-skinned peoples for hundreds of years. This is a grave injustice, and all perpetrators of this injustice will one day have answer to Yah.
Please note that Noach cursed only Canaan and his descendants. Canaan‘s descendants, according to the Holy Scriptures, included:
- Hittites, children of Heth
Canaan‘s descendants included all the seven nations who were driven out of the Land of Israel by the Israelites after the Exodus from Egypt. These nations (Hittites, Canaanites, Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, Hivites and Perizzites) were either completely annihilated or brought under Israelite servitude. These nations no longer exist. Why then has the myth of so-called “curse of Ham” been applied to Africans and/or dark-skinned peoples for perpetuity? The only reason is racism. Ehav Ever presents historical and Talmudic sources refuting the wicked, cruel and slanderous claim that all Africans and dark-skinned peoples are subject to this so-called curse. Africans and dark-skinned peoples are not cursed, neither by Noach nor by Yah. The only cursed individuals are those who willfully reject Yah and His Torah, regardless of race, ethnicity or skin color.
