Shalom everyone! The following is a lecture by renown educator Rabbi Akwetey Amaah about the much-talked about controversy of Africans selling fellow Africans in slavery during the era of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The truth is that Hebrews were selling their fellow Hebrews into slavery. These Hebrews, however, did not sell their own known family members into slavery as is often depicted in slave history movies. Tribes made war on, captured and sold one another not realizing that they were hurting their own Hebrew kinsmen. In the Torah, Yosef‘s own brothers sold him into slavery, and they knew exactly who he was.
Understandably, there is much animosity between the descendants of African slaves and continental West Africans over the latter’s ancestors’ role in the slave trade. The governments of the modern-day West African nations that now form the former Slave Coast (Ghana, Nigeria, Benin) have since apologized for their ancestors’ role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. We must now remember that we are the same people, from the same Hebrew family: The continental West Africans are the root of the tree, while we in the Diaspora are the branches. The branches of a tree will not survive if they curse the roots; neither will the tree bear fruit if the roots curse the branches:
