Origins: The Family of Abraham: From Jacob to Moses

Shalom, everyone! The following is a diagram of the family of Abraham, from his grandson Jacob to the latter’s great-great grandson Moses, based upon the accounts of the Book of Genesis (Bereshith) in the Tanakh, the Book of Jasher, and the Book of Jubilees. The Family of Abraham: From Jacob to Moses

Jacob was the son of Isaac son of Abraham, and Rebecca daughter of Bethuel. Jacob was the twin brother of Esau. He married:

  • Firstly Leah, daughter of Laban his maternal uncle, and had issue:
    • Six sons Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zevulun;
    • One daughter Dinah, who was the twin sister of Zevulun. (Jubilees 28:23)
  • Secondly, Rachel, daughter of Laban his maternal uncle, and had issue:
    • Two sons Joseph and Benjamin;
  • Thirdly Zilpah, Rachel‘s handmaid, and had issue:
    • Two sons Dan and Naphtali.
  • Fourthly, Bilhah, Leah‘s handmaid, and had issue:
    • Two sons Gad and Asher.

Jacob and his family left the land of Canaan to settle in the district of Goshen in the Land of Egypt (Mizraim) to reunite with his son Joseph who had been appointed second-in-command to the Pharaoh.

Son of Jacob Descendants
 Reuben Reuben was the first son of Jacob and Leah. He married Eliuram/Ada daughter of Avi the Canaanite (Jasher 45:1-2, Jubilees 35:20), and had issue:

  • Four sons Enoch, Pallu, Hezron and Carmi.
 Simeon Simeon was the second son of Jacob and Leah. He married:

  • Firstly, Bunah/Adibaa, a Canaanite woman from Shechem (Jasher 45:3, Jubilees 35:20-21), and had issue:
    • One son Saul;
  • Secondly, his sister Dinah (Jasher 45:2), and had issue:
    • Five sons Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin and Zohar

The Book of Jasher states Simeon married Dinah, however, the Book of Jubilees states he married a woman from “Mesopotamia” as his brothers (Jubilees 35:21). Please note that sexual relations between first- and second-degree relatives are now FORBIDDEN by the Torah.

 Levi Levi was the third son of Jacob and Leah. He married Adinah/Melka daughter of Jobab son of Joktan (Jasher 45:5-6, Jubilees 35:20). The Book of Jubilees states however that Levi’s wife was one of the daughters of Aram son of Terah. Levi had issue:

  • Three sons Gershon, Kohath and Merari;
  • One daughter Jochebed.
    • Son Kohath has issue one son Amram;
    • Amram married his aunt Jochebed and had issue one daughter Miriam, and two sons Aaron and Moses.
 Judah Judah was the fourth son of Jacob and Leah. He married:

  • Firstly, Aliyath/Betasuel daughter of Shua, a Canaanite (Jasher 45:3, , Jubilees 35:20), and had issue:
    • Three sons Er, Onan and Shelah;
  • Secondly, Tamar daughter of Elam, son of Shem (Jasher 45:23-32), and had issue:
    • Twin sons Perez and Zerah;
    • Perez had issue two sons Hezron and Hamul.
  • Tamar was formerly married firstly to Er son of Judah, and secondly to Onan son of Judah. Both were struck dead by YAH because they were wicked.
 Dan Dan was the first son of Zilpah, Rachel‘s handmaid, and Jacob‘s fifth son. He married Aphlaleth/Egla daughter of Chamudan the Moabite (Jasher 45:7, Jubilees 35:20), and had issue:

  • Five sons Hushim, Samon, Asudi, Ijaka and Salomon. Only Hushim survived. when Jacob and his entire family moved to Egypt. Samon, Asudi, Ijaka, and Salomon died before entering Egypt.
 Naphtali Naphtali was the second son of Zilpah, Rachel‘s handmaid, and Jacob‘s sixth son. He married Merimah/Rasu’u daughter of Amuram, “son” of Uz, son of Nahor, from the land of Haran (Jasher 45:9-11, , Jubilees 35:20), and had issue:

  • Five sons Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, Shallum, and Iv.

Amuram may have been a grandson of Uz through one of his four sons Abi, Cheref, Gadin or Melus.

 Gad Gad was the first son of Bilhah, Leah‘s handmaid, and Jacob‘s seventh son. He married Uzith/Maka daughter of Amuram, son of Uz, son of Nahor, from the land of Haran (Jasher 45:9-11, Jubilees 35:20), and had issue:

  • Seven sons Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.
 Asher Asher was the second son of Bilhah, Leah‘s handmaid, and Jacob‘s eighth son. He married:

  • Firstly, Adon daughter of Aphlal, son of Hadad, son of Ishmael (Jasher 45:12-13), and had no issue;
  • Secondly, Hadurah/Ijona daughter of Abimuel, son of Eber, son of Shem (Jasher 45:13-18, Jubilees 35:20), and had issue:
    • Four sons Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah;
    • One step-daughter Serah. Serah was born out of Hadurah‘s first marriage to Malkiel son of Elam, son of Shem (Jasher 45:13-15).
    • Beriah had issue two sons Heber and Malchiel.
 Issachar Issachar was the fifth son of Leah and Jacob‘s ninth son. He married Aridah/Hezaqa daughter of Jobab son of Joktan (Jasher 45:5-6, Jubilees 35:20), and had issue:

  • Four sons Tola, Puvah, Iob, and Shimron.
 Zevulun Zevulun was the sixth son of Leah and Jacob’s tenth son. He was the twin brother of Dinah. He married Merisha/Ni’iman daughter of Molad, son of Abida, son of Midian (Jasher 45:19-20, Jubilees 35:20), and had issue:

  • Three sons Sered, Elon and Jahleel.
 Dinah Dinah was the twin sister of Zevulun and only daughter born to Jacob and Leah. She married her older brother Simeon, and had issue:

  • Five sons Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, and Zohar.
 Joseph Joseph was the first son born to Rachel, Jacob‘s 11th son. He married Asenath daughter of Potiphar the Priest of On in Egypt, and had issue:

  • Two sons Manasseh and Ephraim.
 Benjamin Benjamin was the second son born to Rachel and Jacob‘s twelfth son. He was originally named “Ben-Oni” by Rachel who died shortly after his birth. His name was later changed by his father Jacob to “Benjamin.” He married:

  • Firstly, Mechalia/Ijasaka daughter of Aram, son of Zoba, son of Terah (Jasher 45:21-22), and had issue:
    • Five sons Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman.
  • Secondly, Aribath daughter of Shomron, son of Abraham (Jasher 45:22), and had issue:
    • Five sons Ehi, Rosh, Muppin, Huppim, and Ard.
