Shalom, everyone! The following is a video clip from CGTN Africa exploring the recent historical event of 44 African countries signing a continental free trade area called the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA) on March 21, 2018 at the African Union Summit in Kigali, Rwanda. The treaty still needs to be ratified by at least 22 countries at the local before coming into effect. This is a major milestone for the African continent:
The Continental Free Trade Area deal is the most ambitious effort to free up trade flows within the African continent in decades, but it is far from a done deal. The deal needs to be approved at country level, by national legislators, and protectionist instincts there could easily derail it. 44 countries signed the treaty earlier in March, but Nigeria and South Africa – the continent’s 2 largest economies – weren’t among them. As CGTN’s Ramah Nyang reports, there are more hurdles to overcome.
