Erverh Calendar

WATCH: Ga Calendar Months (2017) – Rabbi Akwetey Amaah

Shalom everyone! The following is a video commentary by renown educator Rabbi Akwetey Amaah of the Kingdom of Kings Academy  about the Ga Calendar, the calendar used by the Ga people of Ghana, the descendants of the Israelite tribe of Gad. The original Ga Calendar had 13 months of 28 days each, amounting to 364 days in each year. This was later reduced to 12 months to conform with the Gregorian calendar,  and the days of the 13th month were distributed among the remaining 12 months. The Ga year began in ninth month of Gbo, equivalent to the modern Hebrew calendar beginning in the Seventh Month for a new year number, Tishrei. During the month of Gbo, the Gas plant their crops and pray for rain.

The rainfall is usually heaviest during the month of Gbo. The amount of rainfall is an indicator of the year to come: Plentiful rain means plentiful harvest and a prosperous year both financially and spiritually scarce rainfall means a small harvest and difficult year both financially and spiritually. Rabbi Akwetey then shows the relationship between the former and latter rains referenced in Joel 2:23 and the month of Gbo.

The following are the months of the year on the Ga Calendar. For more information on this and other video lectures on Erverh history and culture please visit Rabbi Akwetey‘s website at https://www.tasteoftext.org/:
